Medicine Head

My head feels a little like this right now:

And my stomach feels a little like this:

Apparently feeding it nothing but soup and an apple between the hours of 10am and 7pm makes it angry.

I think we can all agree that it’s a rare occurrence when yours truly loses interest in thoughtfully prepared food.  Cooking is a sick obsession, but I’ve come to terms with it.

But when I’m sick and my olfactory system is down, I either want no food or comfort food- fast.

We’ve all seen what my comfort food looks like in the past, like here:

or here:

Those aren’t happening tonight.  Why?

a) Comfort food usually involves cheese.  I am steering clear of dairy until I feel better.  (I think it makes the congestion worse…anyone else agree?)

b) These dishes usually take a while to make and let’s be honest, that ain’t in the cards tonight.

c) These dishes require that I’ve gone grocery shopping within the past week or two.  I, sadly, have not done this.  Woman must occasionally subsist on canned beans and veggies (on their last legs) alone.

I know that some good food does a body good, though.  So, I present you with:

Comfort food that even a cold sufferer can make!

If someone would have told me a few years ago that I would call brussels sprouts “comfort food” I would have been shocked and appalled.  But lightly steamed and tossed in a bit of brown butter, cinnamon and dried cranberries, they make you feel good.

Roasted chickpeas!

I rinsed a can of chickpeas, then laid them on a baking sheet with a little cooking spray, salt and cajun seasoning and threw them in a 375° oven for about 50 minutes.  Once they were almost done I cranked up the broiler until they got sort of crispy.

Easy.  Really healthy.  And arguably better than popcorn.  Controversial, I know.  You should try them and see what you think.

I’m off to watch a little TV and hit the hay early- hopefully I can sleep away this cold!

Thanks for all the get better wishes!

What are your easiest, go-to comfort foods?

  1. My mom always said dairy made congestion worse. I still usually eat ice cream when I’m sick though. I can’t help it.

The brussels look delish! Hopefully they have healing powers and you’ll feel better soon!

  2. My favorite sick food is soup and grilled cheese. And ice cream. But since you are steering clear of dairy I would definitely say soup! And EmergenC!
