An Exercise in Self Control

Because I work in a small suburb outside of Chicago, I don’t often have an opportunity to branch out at lunchtime.

I mean, there’s a bagel place.

And a gourmet food shop with phenomenal sandwiches at phenomenally high prices.

And a cafe where I could lunch next to the town’s finest blue hairs.  Not that that’s not a party.

As a result, I eat lunch at my desk most of the time.

That’s why,  when a coworker suggested a trip out of town for lunch today, I jumped.

We decided to grab some food at NY Slices, which has great pizza, but we all know I did this yesterday:

And pizza two days in a row really isn’t necessary.  Tempting, but not necessary.  As painful as that is to admit.

Luckily, NY Slices has a great salad bar option.

And no, I didn’t photoshop that background in.  That’s actually what their tables look like.  It brought me back to the days of Doc Martens and Empire Records.

I chose a salad with greens, red bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, chickpeas, beets and feta with a side of honey mustard dressing.

I think the trick to this kind of ninja self control is to prepare yourself before you even step in the door.  I looked at the salad bar options on their website before we left for lunch and found ingredients that I knew would make an awesome salad, so I was looking forward to eating it before I even ordered.

Eating pizza the night before also helps get the craving out of the way.

Oh, and the fact that I knew I was ordering a couple garlic knots on the side.

Garlic, butter and pizza dough?  I’m defenseless against that.

At least I’m honest with myself.

  1. I love Empire Records. I don’t care how cheesy it is and how bad an actress what’s her name is. (No, seriously, what’s her name…not Liv, the other one…)

Crap. I need to go to bed.

  2. I haven’t been to a place with a decent salad bar in AGES. Granted, I eat it every other day, but still- there’s something to be said about the endless options.

I have, however, been to a cafe with all the blue hairs recently. You know it’s a solid place when a whole crowd of then migrates to one restaurant…

  3. Awesome self control, not sure I’m at a point yet that I could have done what you did!!!! Although your salad does look really delicious!

  4. I love salad bars! The last time I ate from one the guy actually commented on my monster salad. I have a hard time making decisions so I just get everything. 🙂 It was delicious though.
