Because I work in a small suburb outside of Chicago, I don’t often have an opportunity to branch out at lunchtime.
I mean, there’s a bagel place.
And a gourmet food shop with phenomenal sandwiches at phenomenally high prices.
And a cafe where I could lunch next to the town’s finest blue hairs. Not that that’s not a party.
As a result, I eat lunch at my desk most of the time.
That’s why, when a coworker suggested a trip out of town for lunch today, I jumped.
And pizza two days in a row really isn’t necessary. Tempting, but not necessary. As painful as that is to admit.
Luckily, NY Slices has a great salad bar option.
And no, I didn’t photoshop that background in. That’s actually what their tables look like. It brought me back to the days of Doc Martens and Empire Records.
I chose a salad with greens, red bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, chickpeas, beets and feta with a side of honey mustard dressing.
I think the trick to this kind of ninja self control is to prepare yourself before you even step in the door. I looked at the salad bar options on their website before we left for lunch and found ingredients that I knew would make an awesome salad, so I was looking forward to eating it before I even ordered.
Eating pizza the night before also helps get the craving out of the way.
Oh, and the fact that I knew I was ordering a couple garlic knots on the side.
Garlic, butter and pizza dough? I’m defenseless against that.
At least I’m honest with myself.
